Will maximalist decor affect your house sale?

A property in Rhyl, Wales went viral for its Disney-themed interior and became the most-viewed property of 2024.

The property, which had an Aladdin-themed living room and Star Wars décor in the garden, was viewed on Zoopla over 219,000 times.

It has now been sold, but the agent stated that many of the viewings and enquiries came from people who were ‘intrigued’ by the seller’s interior design choice.

For the past decade, the design choice for many homes has been minimalist, often consisting of neutral colours, simple furniture and very little clutter.

This is normally down to personal choice but has also been said to help ‘increase’ re-sale value for future sellers.

However, with the hashtag #maximalism having over 76 million videos on TikTok, more people are now choosing to have colourful décors, including those living in rental properties.

Max out?

In the UK’s competitive housing market, a first impression will grab the attention of a buyer, both online and during a viewing.

Estate agent, Emily Ross said: “Buyers are getting pickier these days and less willing to renovate after moving in.

“When in doubt, go classic.”

However, estate agent Liz Arenberg disagrees and believes that homes with ‘a bit of character’ can help with resale value.

She said: “If every single house looks exactly the same, [clients] are not able to be like, 'Oh yeah, that one house with the white walls,'

"But they might've seen that one kitchen with the magenta wallpaper and had that cool trim."

“Those eye-catching qualities are what potential buyers remember.”

Interior designer Barry Bordelon said that homeowners should not feel pressured to design their house a certain way or change it when re-selling.

He said: “Some people are like, 'Oh, I don't want to paint my room a colour because I might sell it, and someone might not like that colour,' but someone might actually love the colour,"

For those living in rental properties, it is advisable to check with your landlord first.

Many companies offer temporary decorations/solutions that can be removed once you have left the property.
